Eventus is pleased to announce Matt Bell, Director of Education and External Affairs at CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) will be speaking at the Creative Places Conference. Matt will be discussing the impact our surroundings have on wellbeing and reporting on a recent MORI poll, commissioned by CABE and undertaken in Sheffield, that asked the question, “Does Beauty Matter in the Big Society?”.

And for those interested in seeing first-hand some of the changes to the public realm that have taken place in Sheffield, Andrew Skelton, Public Art Officer at Sheffield City Council will be meeting delegates at Sheffield Train Station on the morning of the conference, to take them on a 25 minute guided stroll to the conference venue. The walk will let you see a part of Sheffield that you may not usually visit and get to know each other at the beginning of what we hope will be a day of critical exchange and interesting debate.

The opening of the Look at Me! Images of Women and Ageing exhibition at the Dovercourt Surgery was a great success. Project participants, who all volunteer for Green Estate, brought friends and family to see a selection of photographs from the project hanging in the spacious and modern S2 Surgery.

The event was an opportunity for Clare McManus, Director of Eventus and Dr.Lorna Warren and Dr.Naomi Richards from the University of Sheffield to say a big thank you to everyone who took part. Clare presented certificates and copies of the images taken by Laura Pannacks to participants, who will also receive a framed print from the exhibition when it closes.

500 people pass through the surgery every week and many will recognise the faces and locations in the photographs as all the participants volunteer for Green Estate on Manor Lane. Placing a smaller exhibition in a community context was an opportunity for Eventus to reach a new and wider audience for the project and to thank the women before the city-wide Look at Me! exhibition in March 2011.

Steeling Skies Sheffield is holding a special Art Celebration event in Concord Park on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd August. This FREE event is open to everyone and is a chance to see the park “as you have never seen it before”.
Follow a special art trail and join in with creative activities such as pop-up gardens, urban art and drawing and sculpture workshops. Have a go on a giant wooden swing and build your perfect playground out of local materials. Come and see Concord Park’s very own castle - a showcase exhibition from local children of their fantasy garden and lamp post designs. Go on a journey with a storyteller, sign up for a free walking pack and see if you can spot the ‘GREEN MAN’ as you explore... The event runs from 12 midday to 3pm each day, with free soft drinks served throughout the afternoon.

Steeling Skies is a Creative Places project, coordinated by art collective rednile and commissioned by Sanctuary Housing Association. Since 2009 rednile have been working dynamically with the Shiregreen community in creative sessions and events to gather information and ideas for the creative direction and design of major public realm improvements. Steeling Skies aims to raise the profile of Shiregreen with an ethos of ‘looking upwards and looking again’ at the area and looking forward to future developments. Kids Can Do

Arts activities for youngsters in Sheffield are in full swing across the city, as part of the South Yorkshire Arts Consortium programme managed by Eventus. The creative activities for 8 to 13 year olds are delivered by Art in the Park, Dead Earnest Theatre, Action Space Mobile, Swamp Circus and Point Blank Theatre. The main objective of Kids Can Do is to ensure that young people have the opportunity to access provisions which would otherwise be unavailable to them; to give them the opportunity to explore different, fun and creative activities which raise their awareness of the world around them and increase self-confidence.
